DAWLEY MEDICAL PRACTICE - INFORMATION
OVERVIEW
The surgery is located in Dawley, which is part of Telford in the county of Shropshire. Telford is a new town, some 15 miles from the market town of Shrewsbury and 35 miles from Birmingham. Telford has good rail and road connections, with the motorway providing good access to all parts of the Midlands and the country.
The full postal address of the practice is : Webb House, King Street Dawley, Telford, Shropshire. TF4 2AA
The practice was built in 2002 and has 11 consultation rooms, a treatment and recovery room, an urgent care hub, a large staff meeting room, a reception administration area, a large admin office, a practice managers office and a staff kitchen and rest areas. The practice also has a further large room that was converted in early 2021 for clinical staff to do administration work, and will double up for holding patient group meetings in.
The practice has a list size of just over 11,000 patients. The patients at Dawley are predominantly long established families, with a high level of depravation for the area. The practice is part of Telford. Telford has a rapidly growing population with a lot of new housing with a young mobile population, however this demographic is not representative of Dawley, which retains a more traditional population with a much higher number of elderly patients, and more depravation than the surrounding area. The practice has a good and caring reputation locally.
The practice has GMS status, and its last Care Quality Commission rating was ‘Good’.
The practice uses the EMIS clinical system supported by Docman document management.
There is a strong team ethos within the practice. Learning and continuous development are actively encouraged and supported. The practice was previously a GP training practice and would like to return to this in the future, and has until recently been subject to space constraints. The Practice does, though, support paramedic, pharmacist, nurse and women’s health students and training.
Since June 2020, the practice has been part of the Wrekin PCN and has built good working relationships with the 3 other member practices, with lots of successful collaborative working. The Wrekin PCN has also recruited additional staff to help our patients which include Pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, paramedics, physiotherapist and care coordinator with further additional staff currently being recruited.
Dawley falls under the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin (S,T&W) Commissioning Group (CCG). Further information can be found on the CCG website https://www.shropshiretelfordandwrekin.nhs.uk/
The practice is also serviced by the Shropshire and Telford Hospital (SATH) which has two sites located in Shrewsbury and Telford.
Further information on the practice is available via the website: http://www.dawleymedicalpractice.co.uk/
PRACTICE PHILOSOPHY
As a general philosophy, the aim of the practice team is to preserve the best elements of a traditional style of personal, friendly, accessible family medicine which can react quickly and sensitively to patients’ needs. The practice provides a comprehensive range of primary care services and operates efficient systems of preventative care as well as planned care for long term conditions.
The practice had spent much time in the further development of its appointments system to ensure that it is patient focused and responsive to daily demand.
In response to Covid, the practice has actively redesigned its appointment system to fully utilise IT solutions that have presented themselves, and to ensure the best possible patient care, whilst also ensuring that both patients and staff remain safe. The vast majority of GP consultations are therefore an initial telephone consultation, with patients being seen if clinically needed and the introduction of an urgent care hub in October 2024.
The whole practice team takes pride in the way that the practice has pulled together to implement changes following previous CQC inspections, and in dealing with the challenges from Covid. The practice team is therefore working together to provide a patient centred, environment, with good communication, within a highly integrated multidisciplinary team and is working with NHSE and its Time for Care Team in improving access.
The practice has an active patient group who are consulted about service provision and provide valuable feedback.
