Dear colleagues
Development of alternative roles for STW GPs
I’m getting in touch with you following the recent and continuing significant reduction in both the number of salaried GP positions available to newly-qualified GPs, and the drop in the amount of GP Locum work in STW Practices.
Phil Morgan (STW ICB Primary Care Workforce Lead) and Dr Serena Jones (STW ICB GP Recruitment and Retention Lead) are working with senior colleagues across the main STW NHSE providers to develop alternative employment models/opportunities for qualified GPs in STW who, for whatever reason, are struggling to find work in mainstream General Practice. Although the detail of these opportunities is not yet firmed up, they may include working in the Urgent Treatment Centres and with the acute trust around frailty and discharges, GPWSI roles (with relevant training) and/or working with/in PCN clinics.
So that the ICB can understand the demand for this work/these roles they are asking GPs to respond to Phil Morgan philip.morgan3@nhs.net if this might be of interest to you.
More specifically, if you are interested, please reply to Phil with the following information:
Whether you are struggling to find a substantive role and/or sufficient locum work
Whether you would consider alternative GP roles as described above, if available
An approximation of the number of hours you might want to work in one of these roles
The ICB can’t obviously guarantee any specific work opportunities linked to this initiative, but the more interest it gets from GPs the more likely it is that something might be put in place to support you.
Finally, if you have any queries with this, please feel free to get in touch with Phil Morgan and/or Serena Jones.
